Today we finished the poll about the PCOS treatment and the results are the following:
7% take anticonceptives
16% take Metformin
15% do diet and exercise
This shows that not all ladies with PCOS like the treatment with anticonceptive pills and prefer the other 2 options.Metformin also is not well accepted due to the gastrointestinal secondary effects.

In my oppinion you have to choose the treatment depending on which phase of your life you are in:

1)Puberty/Teenager: During this difficult stage, the worst is the aesthetical factors such as hirsutism and obesity. Therefore you will have to learn to eat properly and change your life style which is vital for the rest of your life and for avoiding future complications, this does not mean not to eat or doing a lot of exercise, but to have a good way of eating and do moderate exercise something you love to do¡¡¡. If you feel that with anticonceptives you are going to reverse your symptons that´s true, but take in mind that before leaving the pills to prepare your body to ovulate itself through good life-style.
2)Maternity/Pregnancy: When we are young and recently diagnosticated with PCOS, nobody advises us of the complexity to be pregnant with PCOS¡¡¡ here also the recommendation is to prepare your body to be pregnant, if you loose 5-10% of your body weight you will have 50% of your treatment done, your body could ovulate and doing exercise will low down your insuline resistence. If you do not get pregnant then you can go to be prescribed Metformin to low down insuline and recover your cycles and ovulation, it takes time but quite a lot ladies have become pregnant with this, also it can be given together with Omifin (clomifen) to induce ovulation, if with this is not possible then go to a good Fertility Center. My advise is that if you have 24 try for a time doing the natural methods together with metformin, in the case to be 34 or more then i would go directly to a Fertility center, as your ovaries at 34 have not the same quality than before.

3)Premenopause and Menopause: there are few studies on this stage of our life but in summary with premenopause (around 45 years old) your body starts to have regular cycles as consequence of lowing the androgens, the bad thing is that the hirsutism does not go away as our body stores these androgens and they are still secreted by our organism. Here the most important thing is to keep with the good style of life as we have more risk to have metabolic diseases such as diabetes type II, high cholesterol and high hypertension. Yearly check-ups must be done to control endometrial tissues or any uterus disease.

As you can see the treatments depends on your genetical, enviromental factors as well as the stage of your life, i recommend going to a good doctor specialized in PCOS and agree with him the different treatments available and be monitorized by them.
